The First Annual Contender Cup/Chesapeake Angler Magazine Striped Bass Tournament was held on December 22, 2007 at Bay Creek Marina and Resort in Cape Charles, Virginia. The Boat House at Boater’s World, Garmin, Yamaha and Virginia Beach Contender also sponsored the tournament. Chris’ Bait & Tackle was the preferred bait and tackle, Kiptopeke
Inn was the preferred hotel and Bay Creek Resort & Club was the preferred boat slip rental and official weigh station. Claude Bain, retired Director of the VMRC Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament was director for the event.

Fifty-six boats registered for the one-day tournament. Striped bass anglers from up and down the East Coast searched the Virginia portions of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean for one big striped bass. The fishing had been great prior to the tournament with most tournament anglers predicting 50 plus pound fish to win the event. It took a 38-pound fish or better to make the top ten leader board. The top eight fish were over 40 pounds.

“The weather was fishable with northeast winds, and fishing was slow with few but large fish being landed,”said Capt. Max

King of Team Chesapeake Angler Magazine. The award ceremony was held at the Aqua Restaurant located at Bay Creek Marina and Resort. The team of Big Mama Captained by Robert Hughes, fishing with good friend Ronnie Currin in Robert’s 21 ft. Sea Pro from Henderson, North Carolina landed the tournament winning fish of 52.46 pounds. In addition, Robert Hughes team won the Small Boat Challenge for fishing in a boat 23 ft. or under. The total winnings for the team Big Mama were over $6100.00. David Nova of White Stone, Virginia and his Team Marlin Maniac won second place of $2500 with a 50.60-pound rockfish.

FOR 2008
The 2008 Contender Cup/Chesapeake Angler Magazine Striped Bass Tournament will be held again at Bay Creek Marina and Resort on December 20, 2008.

Even though the 2007 tournament did not have the 100 boats registered to guarantee the prize money, the tournament committee decided that fourth through tenth places would still be paid as if 100 boats had entered the tournament. Next year the tournament is hoping to pay fifteen to twenty places the same way.

Because of the 2007 success and large participation, there will be an early entry drawing and more door prizes up for grabs

along with the possibility of a new Contender Boat prize in the 2008 tournament.
