CAPTAIN

DAVE

COMPTON

Captain Dave Compton began writing for the Chesapeake Angler Magazine in the October, 2001 issue. Since then over one hundred of his articles have been published in the Angler Magazine. Captain Dave’s other outdoors writing experience was for many years the Saltwater Editor and columnist for another publication.

After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War period, Captain Dave graduated from Wilkes University having earned a B. S. Degree in Business Administration. His long professional career included such positions as Industrial Engineer, Manufacturing Manager, Materials Manager, Director of Operations, and Director of Administration.

Dave’s boating and angling career started right after World War II. He’s boated and fished in freshwater and saltwater ever since then. He was a long time member of the Virginia Anglers Club and won many Club tournaments and species awards. He obtained the Club’s rating of Freshwater Expert Angler with the highest score ever achieved by a member.

In saltwater, Dave’s experience includes deep sea angling from New Jersey to Florida for such species as Tuna, Marlin, Dolphin, Wahoo, King Mackerel, Barracuda, Cobia, and the like. His inshore species included Rockfish, Bluefish, Trout, Spanish Mackerel, Flounder, Drum, Croaker, Spot and some others.

Captain Dave worked as a part time charter boat mate in the Chesapeake Bay prior to his retirement from Central Coca Cola Bottling Company in 1998. After retirement Dave started his own charter fishing business upon receiving his USCG 50 Ton Masters license. He took parties all over the middle and lower Bay, Tangier Sound, and the tidal rivers.

In 2003 Dave founded the Northern Neck Anglers Club with about 35 interested anglers. The Club grew to a membership of 256 anglers at its peak. Dave has been the Club’s President from the beginning. The Club is open to any interested persons age 18 years and older and operates eight free members’ tournaments annually.
