The fish was caught on a spinning rod using a 6” chartreuse Bass Assassin on 12 pound test line while casting under birds.

KAYAK EELING at Kiptopeke
by Kayak Kevin

"It's the most wonderful time of the year," is how the happy Christmas song goes. If you're a fisherman or more specifically, a kayak fisherman, you will be singing the song for a different reason. The big striper migration is coming to the bay and the waters off Kiptopeke, which are known as the striper capital of the world and the easiest place for a kayak angler to land a trophy striper.

Christmas Fish List
byChris Jenkins

With Christmas right around the corner it goes without saying that we will all be asked what we would like for this holiday. Most of us will say we need for nothing and focus on others wants because that is what it’s all about. In the past by doing this I have received countless ties, flannel shirts, and things I really wish my family had not spent the money on. In order to derail this train of unwanted booty I made a stand and suggested items that I knew would bring great pleasure and happiness for years to come. The world of fishing is sacred to us but to outsiders it is myriad of silly lures and excuses as to why we will be late for dinner. Knowing this the treasures description must be clear and concise. If you foresee any room for error you may want to follow my lead and just place the order yourself and promise to look surprised on Christmas morning.

The $3.95 Rockfish Trip Limited Out!
by Jim Baugh

The great thing about our new Go Green Fishing Machine is that we can now fish in places that our larger boat could not access. Fishing literally under the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel has provided some excellent early season rockfishing. The other great thing about this new boat is that even in a down economy, usually we can afford a fishing trip that cost under $4 bucks! Let’s see, with three people on board, average unit cost per person would be $1.23? Guess so! However folks, as the captain of the Go Green Fishing Machine, I did not ask for gas money. I covered the $3.69 in gas myself.

I did ask my cameraman at the beginning of the day if he would rather pay the fuel bill, or buy the cooking oil for frying the fish for dinner. He said, and I quote, “I will buy the cooking oil for sure”. Well, he spent more on peanut oil than I did in gas for the day. Hard to believe, but true!

Kris Johnson of Montross, VA. went fishing with his girlfriend in a bassboat using a rod holding system called a Fold-N-Troll and I used 4 Penn 330GT’s and used tandem white bucktails to catch his first big striper cow at 43” on the Lower Potomac River around Piney Point. Not bad for a bass fishermen.

A 7 pound 2 ounce Spanish Mackerel (pending International Game Fish Association world record) was caught off Reedville on September 20, 2009, by Sophia M. Vella, age 12, while fishing on the Katherine Jeanene captained by Paul Ebert. The fish qualifies for a Junior World Record and was at the time the largest Spanish Mackerel caught this year in the state of Virginia.
