It’s been a cold, snowy winter but the spring and summer season is just around the corner. This month I want to share with you some gear that I love to use and endorse.

I have always worn long sleeve shirts in the summer to keep the sun off. I know to some, long sleeves in the heat of the summer sounds strange. In reality, it’s like your sitting in the shade when the sun is not blazing onto your skin. AFTCO’s Performance long sleeve shirts are made with quick drying, sweat wicking materials that make it feel like your wearing an air-conditioned shirt.

I always carry a rain jacket strapped to my crate. Rainstorms can pop up anytime during the summer. The Aquaskinz Bayman pullover is a lightweight rain jacket that is perfect for those summer showers. During torrential down pours, the Bayman has an adjustable neck seal so the rail won’t run down the collar. The Bayman also works great in the winter as a windbreaker over your cold weather layers.

I’ve gotten away from wearing neoprene waders in the winter, and now wear more comfortable breathable waders. Breathable waders can be very chilly when the wind is blowing. To remedy the chill, I slip on the AFTCO rain paint over my waders.

For the longest time I used cheep sunglasses and I didn’t realize what I was missing, or the damage I was potentially doing to my eyesight. Those plastic cheap lenses were easily scratched. When you have scratches on your glasses your eye will try to focus on the scratch, straining your eyes. When I finally put on a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses, I couldn’t believe how clear and vivid I could see. Not only are they scratch resistant, but also the superior polarized lens allowed me to see into the water better than I ever had before. I use two different lens colors for different light conditions. The Neutral Grey is perfect in bright light, and the Maui Rose is amazing on those over cast days. I was even able to sight cast to reds in muddy water and heavy cloud cover.

Normally when you get a new kayak, the standard seats aren’t that comfortable. It’s usually a good idea I buy an after market seat. Surf to Summit makes the best kayak seats you can buy. The largest most cushioned seat is the GTS Expedition. I use one on my touring kayak were I’m paddling for weeks at a time. On my fishing kayaks I like a low back seat. I use the GTS Sport. Surf to Summit has the full range of seats from high back, thick and thin bottom seats to medium and short backs.

I am always asked about the custom rods I use. My big fish rods have elongated grips. Jesse Buky of JB Rod in VA Beach builds my rods with a long grip so when I leader a big fish beside my kayak I can choke up on the rod for easy handling.

If you have ever wanted to get into shooting video of your kayak fishing adventures the GoPro cameras are perfect for kayak fishing. They come in a waterproof housing and easy to use when you want to post it on the Internet.
