Captain Duby Lowery and his fishing team - Mike Wirt (who actually landed the biggest fish), Blake Smith, Billy Healy (who brought in the second largest of the team's fish), Melvin Chenault and Captain Duby - powered his new 38' custom Evans fishing boat into Maryland waters to hunt for jumbo rockfish. Since it was real early in the Chesapeake's fall trophy season the huge fish were few and far between. But team Anna Lynn was prepared and determined to win an award in the prestigious 2nd annual Casey Neal Rogers Memorial Rockfish Tournament.

At 7 a.m. Captain Lowery and crew deployed their spread of tandem parachutes, umbrella rigs, Mojos, EZ trolls and daisy chains in hopes of luring a big boy to bite. Fishing between buoy 68 & 70 with plenty of bait showing on the fish finder they were confident that a big fish would hit. Needless to say the team was very excited. They knew they were up against the mid Chesapeake's finest anglers. Severty-nine other boats were also determined to win this great tournament.

Early in the day after working the bait hard, a mid depth rod went off and a 22-pound fish was landed. The fish smashed a custom Blake Smith tandem trolled in 80 feet of water. Later that morning another a 26 pounder was boated. Since the rules stated that the total combined weight of two rockfish would determine the winner the team felt that they needed a bigger fish to be in the money. Then it happened! A 32-pound rock hit another custom lure to bring the team's total fish weight to 59.15 pounds! Would this be a winning combination? Anxiously Duby fired up Anna Lynn's turbo diesels and wasted no time in getting back to Smith Point Marina to check in his fish before the designated 4:00 p.m. check in time. Then the announcement came. Team Anna Lynn was in first place in the Casey Neal Rogers Tournament! It was an excellent start for the team's first time in this event.

Several other Captains faired well in the tournament with Dickey Dost aboard the Hooked II winning second place and David O'Bier fishing on the Sonya B with third place. Marcus Wilson, fishing with Captain Drew Payne placed first in the youth division with a 54.84-pound total and Ashley Ward was awarded second place for youth with a 42.75 pound total.

The Casey Neal Rogers Memorial Tournament was established in 2004 to honor one of the Northern Neck's outstanding fisherman and scholar at East Carolina University - Casey Neal Rogers. We will never forget this fine young man's passion for fishing the Chesapeake! This tournament is a fine tribute to Casey's enthusiasm. Ryan Rogers, Casey's brother, really appreciates the support of local charter boat captains and recreational fishermen. This event is extremely well run. The business community provides tremendous support, but the real winners of the tournament are those students who are awarded the $10,000 in scholarships to further their college education as Casey had done.

Keep this Tournament in mind when you are planning your fishing in 2006. What better way to kick off the fall rockfish season than to participate and win the CASEY NEAL ROGERS MEMORIAL ROCKFISH TOURNAMENT?
